Prep Transition
At Lumen Christi Catholic Primary School, we are committed to supporting a smooth, positive and welcoming transition to school for both children and their families.
Our transition program begins well before students start their first day.
Throughout the year, our leadership team visits local kindergartens and early learning centres to introduce themselves and share information about our school with prospective families. We also offer Prep tours, providing families with the opportunity to explore our learning spaces and experience our welcoming community.
During Term Three, Lumen Christi staff visit enrolled children at their kindergartens to begin building relationships and familiarity. We also attend information evenings, sharing helpful tips with parents on how best to prepare their child for school.
In Term Three, we host three Prep Playdate sessions at school. Each session focuses on key areas such as Mathematics, Literacy and Social Development. These sessions are designed not only to support children in becoming comfortable in their new environment, but also to provide an opportunity for parents to stay, engage in activities, and connect with other families. Building a sense of community is an important part of the transition process.
In Term Four, children participate in two student-only transition days, allowing them to further develop confidence and independence within the school setting. This is followed by an Orientation Day, where students meet their classroom teacher and spend time in their new learning space in preparation for the following year.
Year 6 to Year 7 Transition
At Lumen Christi, we believe that a strong start to school begins with connection, confidence and community.
The transition from primary school to secondary school is an exciting milestone, but it can also feel daunting for many students. At Lumen Christi, we are committed to supporting our students as they prepare for this important next step in their learning journey.
Our Grade 6 team provides a range of opportunities to help students build confidence and readiness for secondary school. One of the key initiatives is our “High School Experience Days”, where students follow a secondary-style timetable. This allows them to experience moving between different learning spaces, working with different teachers, and managing a more structured daily schedule. We aim to make these days as realistic as possible to help ease the transition.
As our students move on to a variety of secondary schools, we encourage families to engage with each school’s individual orientation and transition programs. We support students in making the most of these opportunities so they can become familiar with their new environments and begin building connections.
For students who may find change more challenging, including those with additional needs, Lumen Christi offers a specialised transition program. This initiative is designed to support students in overcoming feelings of anxiety, uncertainty and apprehension as they move from primary to secondary school. Through targeted support, personalised strategies and additional transition opportunities, we aim to build confidence and ensure each student feels secure, prepared and supported.
At Lumen Christi, our goal is to ensure every student feels confident, capable and ready to embrace the opportunities that lie ahead.
