Before 1961, the Catholic community of Laverton worshipped in neighbouring parishes or at the RAAF Chapel in Laverton. As the local Catholic population grew, St Martin de Porres Primary School opened, later reopening in 1972, followed by Queen of Peace Primary School in 1982.
Rapid residential growth led to the expansion of the parish boundaries in 1999. Land was purchased in Point Cook for Lumen Christi Catholic Primary School, with construction commencing in August 1999.
Lumen Christi officially opened on 27 January 2000, providing Catholic education for students from Prep to Grade 6. The original facilities included an administration building, relocatable classrooms, outdoor amenities, landscaped play areas and parking. The first permanent classroom building opened in Term 2 of that year.
The school continued to grow through several major building projects:
- 2002: A multipurpose hall, kitchen, storage areas and three additional learning spaces.
- 2007: Three learning spaces, a sports stadium, staff parking and drop-off and pick-up facilities in Kirkstone Road.
- 2008: An outdoor recreation area featuring a junior soccer pitch and artificial-turf play spaces.
- 2009–2010: Eight learning spaces, a library, theatrette and computer laboratory, along with a vehicle accessway connecting Point Cook Road and Kirkstone Road.
- 2026: A significant building and grounds redevelopment commenced to further enhance the school’s learning and recreational facilities. The project includes a new grassed area at the front of the school and the redevelopment of the school oval, providing students with improved outdoor spaces for sport, play, learning and community activities.
Further Catholic primary schools were established to serve Point Cook’s growing population: Stella Maris opened in 2006, followed by St Mary of the Cross in 2014.
Today, Lumen Christi has 27 permanent classes and a projected enrolment of approximately 620–640 students in 2026. Classes are carefully structured to accommodate families moving into the school’s catchment area while minimising disruption to existing students.
