Learning at Home

Learning at Home – Strengthening learning through partnerships with families

Our Philosophy

Learning at Lumen Christi extends beyond the classroom and is strengthened through the partnership between students, teachers, families and carers. We believe that learning is a shared journey, where home and school work together to nurture confident, capable and curious learners who are equipped with the knowledge, skills and dispositions to flourish at school and beyond.

Learning at home provides meaningful opportunities for students to consolidate classroom learning, develop positive learning habits and foster independence, responsibility and organisation. Through purposeful learning experiences, students are encouraged to see learning as an ongoing process that inspires curiosity, builds confidence and supports lifelong growth.

How Learning at Home Supports Learning

Home learning is designed to complement and reinforce classroom learning. It provides opportunities for students to:

  • practise and consolidate new knowledge and skills
  • reflect on and extend their classroom learning
  • develop independence, organisation and responsibility
  • build positive routines and effective learning habits
  • share their learning with families and carers
  • develop confidence as motivated and self-directed learners.

Learning at home is purposeful, developmentally appropriate and designed to support students in achieving their personal best while maintaining a healthy balance between learning, family life and wellbeing.

Working in Partnership

Strong partnerships between home and school play an important role in supporting every student’s success. Families and carers are encouraged to take an active interest in their child’s learning by providing encouragement, celebrating effort, discussing learning experiences and fostering a positive attitude towards education.

Together, we create a supportive learning community where students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, embrace challenges and develop the confidence to become lifelong learners.

How Families Can Support Learning at Home

Families and carers play an important role in fostering positive attitudes towards learning. Simple, consistent routines and encouragement can have a significant impact on a child’s confidence, wellbeing and success.

Families can support learning at home by:

  • establishing regular routines and a quiet space for learning
  • reading together and discussing books, ideas and current events
  • encouraging curiosity by asking questions and exploring new ideas
  • celebrating effort, perseverance and personal growth
  • encouraging children to organise their time and take responsibility for completing learning tasks
  • maintaining open communication with teachers when support or clarification is needed
  • balancing learning with family time, play, physical activity and wellbeing.

By working together, we create the conditions for every child to thrive as a confident, engaged and successful learner.

Called to Learn

Learning is a lifelong journey that extends beyond the classroom. As learners who are Called to Learn, students are encouraged to approach every opportunity with curiosity, perseverance and hope. Through the partnership between home and school, students continue to grow in knowledge, confidence and character, using their gifts to contribute positively to their communities and let their light shine.
