Our Mathematics program is grounded in evidence-informed teaching practices and aligned with the Victorian Curriculum 2.0. Teachers design engaging, differentiated learning experiences informed by ongoing assessment to ensure every learner is appropriately supported, challenged and able to make continuous progress.
Mathematics lessons follow an explicit instruction approach, where teachers clearly explain and model new concepts before guiding students through supported practice and gradually releasing responsibility as confidence and independence develop. Students participate in daily review to strengthen retention of previously taught learning, while ongoing formative assessment and regular checks for understanding enable teachers to respond to individual learning needs. Through purposeful challenge, students learn to persevere, embrace mistakes as valuable opportunities for learning and develop confidence in tackling increasingly complex mathematical problems.
Our mathematics program develops deep conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, mathematical reasoning and problem-solving across all areas of the curriculum. Students build knowledge in number, algebra, measurement, space, statistics and probability through carefully sequenced learning experiences that encourage exploration, discussion and application. At Lumen Christi, we use the Ochre Education Mathematics curriculum as our core instructional resource. Ochre provides a carefully sequenced, evidence-informed approach that supports consistent, high-quality teaching across the school and enables students to build secure mathematical understanding over time. Teachers use Ochre alongside the Victorian Curriculum, ongoing assessment and professional judgement to deliver responsive instruction that meets the needs of every learner.
