At Lumen Christi, we cultivate positive behaviour through consistent expectations and strong relationships, empowering every student to learn and succeed.
Expectations
By having one clear and consistent set of expectations across the whole school, we ensure that everyone in our community — students, staff, parents and visitors — understands what is expected. Grounded in our Catholic values, we are committed to nurturing a safe, respectful and inclusive environment where each person is valued and supported to flourish.
At Lumen Christi, we are:
Be Safe
We keep ourselves and others safe by making responsible choices, moving safely, using equipment appropriately and seeking help when needed.
Be Respectful
We treat others with kindness and consideration, use positive language, include others and allow everyone the opportunity to learn, recognising the dignity of each person.
Be Responsible
We take ownership of our actions and learning, care for our environment and belongings, and strive to always do our personal best, using our gifts to contribute positively to our community.
These expectations are consistent across all settings—including classrooms, playgrounds, the community and online—ensuring a safe, respectful and supportive environment for all.
At the beginning of each year, these expectations are explicitly taught and discussed with students to ensure a shared understanding. Through ongoing lessons and daily practice, students are supported to make positive behaviour choices and take responsibility for their actions, guided by our faith and the values of our school community.
Consequences
Positive Behaviours
Learners who make positive behaviour choices are regularly praised or given rewards, including ClassDojo points, free time or special prizes.
Minor undesired behaviours
Sometimes a learner’s behaviour choice is not appropriate. In these situations, a natural or otherwise appropriate consequence might apply. The use of Corporal Punishment is not allowed under any circumstance at St James the Apostle Primary School. Some consequences may include:
- Time out
- Restorative chat
- Carrying out an action that repairs the relationship
- Repairing an item
- Cleaning up a space
- Removal from a learning space
Major undesired behaviours
Some behaviour can be considered major and require following established procedures. Serious offences are defined as actions that:
- Seriously transgress our Catholic Schools values of respect and love.
- Consistently and deliberately fail to comply with any directions given by the principal, teachers or school staff.
- Are offensive or dangerous to the physical or emotional health of any member of our community.
- Consistently and deliberately interferes with the educational opportunities of other learners.
These behaviour choices may lead to a learner being immediately removed from the learning space, and will require a re-entry meeting if the behaviour choice is a physical one.
Bee Tokens & Dojo Points
At Lumen Christi, we use Bee Tokens and Dojo Points as part of our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) approach to recognise and reinforce positive behaviour.
Students are awarded Bee Tokens or Dojo Points when they demonstrate our school expectations: Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible. Bee Tokens are physical tokens that students can exchange for Dojo Points, while Dojo Points may also be awarded directly by teachers in recognition of positive choices.
Dojo Points are tracked on the classroom interactive whiteboard, where each student has their own avatar and can see their progress. This visible system encourages motivation, goal setting and celebration of positive behaviour.
Individual and class rewards are used to acknowledge achievements. These may include reaching a points milestone (such as 10 points), earning privileges within the classroom, or working towards whole-class rewards that promote teamwork and a positive learning environment.
Grounded in our Catholic values, this system supports students to make positive choices, take responsibility for their actions and contribute to a respectful and supportive school community.
